Campbell Newman has committed the government to funding half of a $7.5 million "congestion-busting" road upgrade in the electorate.

He made the announcement in his capacity as the "local member" for Ashgrove - not the Premier - a point which was made on both the announcement media alert and the following media release.

The announcement would see Waterworks Road between Trout Street and Bethenden Terrace widened under a joint venture with the Brisbane City Council.

It came less than a week after a ReachTEL poll, first published by The Courier-Mail, found Mr Newman was trailing former member for Ashgrove Kate Jones in the polls by 10 points.

Since being elected, Mr Newman has spent more than $100 million on his electorate, which he holds with a 5.7 per cent margin, the bulk of which came from the Samford Road and Wardell Street intersection upgrade.

Mr Newman, as the local member, said the Newman government, of which he is premier, had delivered on its election promises

"This is a project I will deliver, if I am re-elected, between 2015 and the end of 2016 with the Lord Mayor," he said.

"I have a plan, I have been sticking to the plan, I delivered the first part of the plan and if I am re-elected, I will continue to deliver for the local community."

But Mr Newman, as the premier, standing in his local electorate of Ashgrove, said voters should brace themselves for "porkies" during the election campaign.

"Everyone knows that the unions are the Labor party and the Labor party are the unions," he said.

"So people across this state are going to have to prepare themselves to see people making up all sorts of things, all sorts of porkies.

"And the bottom line is my team were elected to sort out a mess, to get the economy going.  We have sorted out the finances of the state of Queensland.

"We have a strong plan to lease assets which will allow us to create 25,000 jobs, we have also made sure that hospital services are on their way to being the best in the nation, crime has dropped dramatically and our schools are receiving record funding and support for independent operation and teacher quality.  So those are the facts, the facts speak for themselves."

A date for the election is yet to be set, but a quasi election campaign has been in place since parliament rested for the year last month.
