Mornington Shire Council environmental health officer Bella Joe says mosquitoes breed in still water – both fresh and salt.
Ms Joe is urging residents to empty water out of their everyday household items like pot plant bases and tyres, which may be potential breeding grounds.
Island health professionals often tend to people who have contracted diseases from mosquitoes during the summer on Mornington Island.
North West Queensland Public Health Unit Physician and Director Dr Steven Donohue says the most common mosquito-borne diseases in Queensland are Ross River and Barmah Forest viruses.
