Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said "every available officer" would be sent to patrol sporting events, public events such as Christmas gatherings and events at QPAC, neighbourhoods and streets over the next few weeks.

Security around government buildings and patrols were increased on Monday, following news of the Martin Place siege.

Commissioner Stewart and Premier Campbell Newman, who returned from his holidays to make the announcement, said those increased patrols would continue.

But there remained "no evidence", intelligence or indication Queensland was at risk of any attack.

"I put it like this...we have the police out there, so people do have that re-assurance and we are taking it seriously, we are taking it seriously in case there is somebody else who is disaffected, who might want to do something violent," Mr Newman said.

"And we are saying to the community the best way you can help as well, is if you see something untoward, if you see someone, or there is someone venting or making threats or, you know, engaging in some sort of suspicious activity, we would like to know.

"The Commissioner and his team would like to know. And if the community alerted us like that, we could do the best possible job of protecting all of us.

"That is what we are saying today. We don't think there is going to be an issue. We have no evidence to suggest that, but if we can take those steps and the police do their job, with the resources we have given them, then we can best protect the people in this state."

Mr Stewart said there was always a "spike" in calls regarding suspicious activity following events like the siege.

"When events like this take place, we always see spikes and that is the truth of it and that is right across the nation," he said.

"You might have heard in Sydney yesterday they had a rash of suspicious parcel type calls. All turned out to be nothing, but we are grateful that people take the responsibility and make the call."

Mr Stewart said Queensland Police would continue to work with the nation's surveillance agencies "to monitor some individuals".

"But this is not a big brother state, either," he said.

"I mean, we had to take people's rights, normal rights, into consideration when we do this."

Despite the heightened police presence and requests to be alert, both Mr Newman and Mr Stewart encouraged people to live their "normal lives".

"Events like this will test us," Mr Newman said.

"Whether we pass or fail that test depends on all our actions. We must all come together as as community. We must not let this act change the way we live our lives. We must continue to go out and do what we always do and do that without fear.

"We must always reach out to our neighbours and our friends, regardless of where they've come from around the world, regardless of their religion - that is what is Australia is about."
