The Richmond Shire Mayor’s endorsement as the LNP candidate for Mount Isa at the next state election was confirmed yesterday.
Cr Wharton has been mulling the idea of running since the Local Government Association of Queensland conference in Mackay in late October.
Cr Wharton, who has served on council since 1991, and as Richmond mayor since 1997, and was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in 2007, will contest the seat against incumbent Rob Katter and Labor’s Simon Tayler.
He said there was not a local issue he did not know about, and he would make sure the people of the region were heard.
“It’s time the people of Mount Isa had a strong voice in government, someone who is focused on actually delivering for our region,” Cr Wharton said.
“Funding for our roads and improving water supply to population centres in the electorate are just two of my priorities.
“The Newman LNP government is making real progress for Queensland but there’s more to do. I’ll make sure the issues that are important to North West Queensland are part of the LNP’s plan for a brighter future.’’
Cr Wharton said the North West was a strong contributor to the state’s economy and reiterated he would be a strong member of the LNP while keeping the region’s interests foremost.
Cr Wharton has a long association with the cattle industry and was congratulated by LNP president, Bruce McIver on his endorsement.
