Every councillor should be thanked for their hard work too. They have responsibilities in their other roles as well and attending regular council meetings, workshops and community events would not always be easy.
A number of them have their own businesses, one of them works underground, and others had positions in groups like the Mount Isa Chamber of Commerce. They are frequently representing council at events. For example, if there are three events I have to cover in one day, I usually see the same councillors there too – and they have probably squeezed workshops in between.
I moved to Mount Isa in March, and since then I have talked to each councillor. I learn from every councillor by their example. From Cr Joyce McCulloch I learn to examine all implications of a decision before making it. From Brett Peterson I learn enthusiasm and to create new ideas for old problems, and from Jean Ferris I learn not to overlook our youths’ talent.
It has not been an easy year for council. Water issues, financial difficulty, staff cuts. And not everybody in the community agrees with the actions council takes.
But I think councillors have deserved a rest these holidays.
Councillors, I hope you have a great time with your family, receive the presents you hoped for, the rain you prayed for, the relaxation you need, and the personal achievements you seek. Best wishes and a Merry Christmas to you as well.
