There is a 95 per cent chance of rain and storms, with the Bureau of Meteorology expecting between 10 and 35 millimetres of rain in the Brisbane area.

Forecaster Dean Narramore said the rainfall could be even higher.

"There's a lot of humidity out there so any storms will be able to use this moisture and drop a very quick 30 to 50 millimetres," he said.

"We could see a good chance of very heavy rain over a brief period and flash flooding with some of the bigger storms."

There is also a chance of hail, although the hailstones are not likely to be anything like those seen during the November 27 storms.

"We can't rule it out, but the environment isn't really conducive to massive hail," Mr Narramore said.

A weather warning is in place for fires in the Central West, Maranoa and Warrego and Darling Downs and Granite Belt.

Mr Narramore said the risk of lightning also increased the fire risk.

On Wednesday, areas of the Gold Coast experienced the warmest temperatures in about a decade, with the mercury reaching 37 degrees at the Gold Coast Seaway and Coolangatta.

Meanwhile, the Sunshine Coast was hit with large hail and heavy winds.

A police spokesman said "extreme weather" caused a tree to fall on the Bruce Highway at Pomona. When police arrived they found a two-car crash in the southbound lanes.

A 59-year-old Gympie woman died from injuries from the crash.
