Mount Isa Care Packages co-ordinator Todd Vonhoff said 42 boxes filled with groceries would cover 23 stations near Longreach.
Several transport services are moving the packages free-of-charge. Groceries such as Christmas puddings, flour, sugar, canned foods, juices and soft drinks will ensure those struggling “don’t feel left out” of the Christmas celebrations.
The money that was to be spent on food could go towards presents instead, Mr Vonhoff said.
Mr Vonhoff said Mount Isa Care Packages sent 350 care packages to stations across the North West region this year.
The next areas to receive packages will probably be Julia Creek, Boulia, Bedourie and the Gulf region.
Mr Vonhoff gave a “massive” thank you to LJ Hooker for its donation of $800 worth of food, which he collected on Wednesday.
“I really hope we can put some smiles on some graziers’ [and] farmers’ faces with the packages I’ll make up with this awesome donation we received this afternoon,” he said.
“Thank you again from the bottom of my heart.”
LJ Hooker Mount Isa principal Sherrie Tuppurainen said $800 worth of food was collected through staff, the community and Glencore.
She revealed the Bucci family also donated $500 in cash.
LJ Hooker was considering two food collections a year for “as long as it’s needed”.
“We’re looking at doing another one in February,” she said.
It was a shame the charity was necessary, but every bit helped, Ms Tuppurainen said.
