Eight people have been caught attempting to groom children online for sex in Queensland in the past five weeks, according to Taskforce Argos Detective Superintendent Cameron Harsley, with many going to extraordinary lengths to win the trust of potential victims.

"One a week in the last month...that's a frightening statistic, a statistic that tells me that we really need to - as a community - take an interest in the safety of our children," he said.

Detectives from Taskforce Argos, the Queensland Police Service (QPS) specialist online child exploitation team, made the latest arrest - that of a 47-year-old Victorian man - in Brisbane on Wednesday night following an undercover sting.

The man travelled to Queensland to have sex with a 14-year-old girl he had been corresponding with since September, unaware he had been talking with an Argos detective the entire time.

Police will allege the man also sent a number of explicit images and engaged in a sex act in front of a webcam, while the 'teenager' watched on.

"Since November 13, Argos has, on seven separate other occasions, engaged with people and arrested them for similar acts," he said.

"Can I say, the regularity of these events is disturbing, it's a real warning we need to take an active interest in what is going on online."

The 47-year-old was charged with 20 grooming offences and released on bail on Thursday, after appearing before a magistrate to face the charges.

Superintendent Harsley reaffirmed previous warnings to parents to be vigilant in monitoring their children's internet use.

While declining to nominate specific sites utilised by paedophiles, such as Facebook, he said there was a misconception that it was just mainstream sites being used to win the trust of children and teenagers.

"These individuals are going to all sorts of lengths to have contact with children," Superintendent Harsley said.

"Parents and guardians need to take an interest in the devices their children are using and take an interest in who their child is speaking to.

"It was quite obvious this person was actively on the internet seeking out children.

"Police alone cannot keep children in our community safe, it starts at home with monitoring the activity of children."

He said the variety of chat rooms, along with Smartphone applications, being utilised was on the rise.

"We find most of the people, nine out of 10, are trying to engage in sexual activity...all of them are a danger to children," he said.

"There is a false sense on the internet because you are using it in your home, you are secure but you are not safe.

"The internet allows people into your house. If you think it's safe because you are using it in your house, it's not, because its connecting you with the world."

He said children were best placed to teach parents about the sites and applications they used.

In the meantime, police would also continue their own vigilance in attempting to thwart the activities of online sex predators.

"Can I say finally, to those who prey on our children and exploit them, whether physically or sexually, you will not get away with it in Queensland," Superintendent Harsley said.

"If you have that intention we will catch you.

"It's one of the most despicable crimes, preying on very vulnerable children."
