Already with key utility Ben Reid in Munich for treatment because of persistent soft-tissue injuries, the Magpies revealed on Friday that boom father-son recruit Darcy Moore and midfielder Alan Toovey were also hurt, having endured what the club said were "minor setbacks".

The Magpies said Moore had "suffered a minor injury to the big toe on his left foot. The father-son recruit will wear a boot for three weeks, after which the injury will be reviewed. The treatment is deliberately conservative and the club doctors do not expect any long-term problems with the injury."

Toovey suffered what was described as a "minor injury to his left calf muscle while running during his Christmas break. He will follow a modified program for the next two weeks before he returns to full training."

Toovey was one of 15 injured players at the end of last season, with seven of those, including Toovey, battling groin or soft-tissue injuries.

Reid is due back in Australia on Sunday, having been treated by renowned doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt, from European soccer giant Bayern Munich. He has helped several of the world's leading sportsmen.

Fitness boss Bill Davoren and club director Alisa Camplin, a gold medallist at the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics, were central in the club's internal review of its post-season injury and fitness management.

The Magpies have also made it clear they have needed to elevate the fitness levels of their players this pre-season in a bid to match rival clubs.
