Dannan Pearce, 21, remained in the police watch-house while the matter was adjourned to today.
No application for bail was made.
Mr Pearce will face four charges of assaulting police, one charge of unlawful possession of a firearm and unauthorised possession of ammunition.
The court heard that Mr Pearce was in hospital before being moved to the watch-house.
Police prosecutor acting Sergeant Paige Barrow requested Mr Pearce appear handcuffed and accompanied by three police officers at the next mention.
Acting Sergeant Barrow described the defendant’s behaviour when the alleged offences happened as “fairly unpredictable”.
There was concern as to how he would behave in court, she said.
Legal representative Murray Lehmann objected to his client being handcuffed because it might prejudice the views of others in the court room.
Magistrate Stephen Guttridge allowed the prosecution’s application for handcuffs.
The matter was not being heard in a higher court where handcuffs could affect the views of a jury, he said.
The charges relate to an incident in which police were called to a Pioneer house at 12.20pm on Monday.
An emergency situation was declared about 12.45pm after a man allegedly made threats.
Police forcibly removed the man from the address shortly before 5pm.
No one was injured during the incident.
