Mount Isa district disaster co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Sonia Smith said police were urging drivers to plan ahead and pack plenty of water and food.
“If travelling in the wet season, take the time to plan your route and check for road closures,” she said.
“We are urging drivers to plan ahead and reassess non-essential travel when closures are in place or when there is significant rainfall in a particular area.
“When travelling outside major towns, motorists should carry an adequate supply of water, food and essential items and let someone know details about their proposed travel arrangements.”
Because of recent rainfalls, police yesterday closed Landsborough Highway between Cloncurry and McKinlay, and the Flinders Highway between Cloncurry and Julia Creek.
Senior Sergeant Smith said closure signs were in place for public protection and people could be fined if they ignored the signs.
“Drivers who ignore road closure signs due to flooding can receive an on-the-spot fine of $683 or even face criminal charges for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. Drivers also run the risk of voiding their insurance policies,” she said.
“Drivers put themselves and their passengers at risk of significant harm if they travel on roads that have been closed.
“Rescuing stranded travellers puts considerable pressure on emergency services, which are often limited in remote locations.’’
Mount Isa Police Sergeant Jakki Poustie also urged people to think before attempting to cross flooded areas.
“Drivers should be aware that driving through road closed signs is an offence and puts themselves and emergency service personnel at risk,” she said.
“If it’s flooded, forget it, and take care on the roads with all the rain about.”
