Starc ripped through the tourist’s top order with two wickets in the first over of the match and fellow quick Pat Cummins dismissed Joe Root in the third to reduce England to 3-12.
Starc finished with figures of 4-42 off 8.5 overs to help his side claim a bonus point victory as England struggled with the bat on a slow pitch.
Aside from skipper Eoin Morgan, who scored 121 off 136 balls, England’s miserable performances from the 2013 Ashes series resurfaced, as it posted an under-par 234 before being bowled out in 47.5 overs.
Mitchell Johnson, rested for this match, tormented the tourists last summer but it was Starc who stepped up to become Australia’s latest left-arm destroyer.
‘‘Hopefully we reopened a few scars tonight,’’ Starc said.
‘‘They are going to have to be out here for a few months now with the tri-nations and the World Cup.
‘‘There is no better way at kicking off our campaign by getting over them tonight. I think we played really well with bat and ball and fielded with real intensity.’’
While Starc impressed with the ball, it was David Warner who starred with the bat, scoring his fourth century of the summer with a brilliant 127 off 115 balls.
