Now Labor has signalled it would look at reinstating the rights same-sex couples had under the Bligh government civil union legislation, which was watered down by the LNP within its first few months of office, following concerns from Christian lobby groups.

Under Labor, which passed the legislation in the dying days of its government and was criticised for being a cynical vote buying exercise, same-sex couples could undergo  state-endorsed ceremonies to formalise their relationship. After speaking about repealing it during the 2012 election campaign, the LNP compromised with Christian lobbyists by removing state-sanctioned ceremonies, which they argued were too close to marriage, and replacing then with a registered relationship.

Premier Campbell Newman and other small-l Liberals were understood to have fought hard to retain as much of the original legislation as possible.

On Monday, Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk said restoring state-sanctioned ceremonies to the legislation was something she was giving "a lot of consideration to".

"I'm looking at it at the moment and we'll be having more to say about that during the campaign," she said.

Treasurer Tim Nicholls said the government had no plans to revise its policy.

The government is looking at expunging the records of people found guilty of homosexual acts under historic laws, following movement in that direction from New South Wales and Victoria.
