A STRONG finish in Sunday’s final leg of the North Queensland Triathlon series should be enough for Mount Isa triathlete Vicki Nicholson to score victory in the 25-34 years category.

Nicholson will have home-ground advantage in the event at Lake Moondarra, hosted by the Isa Rats Running and Triathlon Club.
It will be the first time the Rats have hosted a leg of the North Queensland Triathlon series. The series has weaved its way across all parts of North Queensland, and concludes in Mount Isa for the 10th and final leg to crown the winners of all categories.
Nicholson currently sits in third spot in the hotly-contested category on 19 points, only five behind Mackay’s Jennifer Short, who is not expected to make the trip to compete in Mount Isa.
In the teams’ event, the Isa Rats should coast to a team event series win in the female category. The female Rats sit in second spot behind Townsville’s Free Radicals (175), but with weight of numbers should take top spot.
Cloncurry triathlete Kit Rix (20 points) sits fifth in the 35-44 age men’s category and with victories in Julia Creek and Longreach, and could enhance his series credentials with victory on Sunday.
Recent Busselton ironman performer Amanda Gowing will also be one of the main attractions at the event.
Nichole Knepprath won’t be competing on Sunday, but would’ve been another winning series chance for Mount Isa in the 35-44 age female bracket. Knepprath (18 points) only needed three points on Sunday to take the crown from Land (20 points).
Isa Rats club secretary Victoria Corner said it would be a fun, but highly competitive day of action.
“Get out to the lake Sunday morning, join in the fun and support your local athletes.
“Triathlons are growing in popularity across Australia and the Isa RATS Running and Triathlon Club hopes to attract as many people as possible to this great sport, from beginners to veterans.”
Registration is from 7am and 7.45am, Queensland country
Race packs can be picked up from the Queensland Country Credit Union in Mount Isa from 3pm to 4.30pm or from Krutschnitt Oval from 4pm to 5pm tomorrow.
Organisers suggest spectators are settled by 7.30am with cyclists on the roads from about 8am.
A carnival atmosphere is set to greet competitors for the event.
Triathletes from Julia Creek, Longreach and Cloncurry will make up a field of competitors to test their skills in the swim, bike and run event.
There is also a team event for those not confident of competing all three disciplines.
