MOUNT Isa district superintendent Russell Miller received the Australian Police Medal for distinguished service – the highest honour he has received in a career spanning 40 years.
Superintendent Miller is one of six in the Queensland Police Service to receive the national award this year.
His award was acknowledged by Mayor Tony McGrady at the Mount Isa City Council Australia Day Awards ceremony at the Mount Isa Civic Centre yesterday. Various “agents” united in a “conspiracy” to ensure Superintendent Miller attended the ceremony.
He was told his wife Vicki would receive an award at the ceremony, so he postponed “other plans” to be there for her.
Superintendent Miller said the national medal was “two or three levels above” what he had received previously.
“It is certainly above everything else I have been considered for,’’ he said.
“It is held in high regard.”
Superintendent Miller was born and bred in Gympie, and began as a cadet there in 1976.
He could not remember exactly why he wanted to be a police officer when he started.
“I suppose it was being interested in police and things like that.
“It’s been a good career, without a doubt.”
A media statement from Queensland Police Service said the Superintendent was “recognised for his leadership and excellence in operational policing, organisational improvement and community engagement’’.
“His professionalism, expertise and leadership in the roles of District Officer and District Disaster Co-ordinator have earned the respect of his peers and the support of his subordinates, agency partners and members of the community.” Superintendent Miller began his position in Mount Isa in November 2011, and had no intention of leaving soon.
