With term one beginning at Queensland public schools on Tuesday, Brisbane City Council commissioned eight marked cars for parking officers to use to enforce traffic rules around the city's schools.

The blue and yellow cars are part of a high visibility approach to tackle school parking woes, a move sparked by an increase in complaints, Cr Adrian Schrinner said.

Cr Schrinner also said the council would work with 300 of the city's schools to develop traffic and parking management plans to reduce congestion and increase safety.

"The consensus from schools is that parking areas are not being respected and rules are not being enforced – a dangerous combination which is creating serious safety issues for students and other pedestrians," he said.

"At schools' request, council officers will be out in force, with a very noticeable presence to encourage motorists to drive and park safely. We want to make sure all motorists are doing the right thing for the safety of school students."

In an interview with Fairfax Radio 4BC, Cr Schrinner said using high-visibility deterrent to bad behaviour was a better solution than increasing fines.

"The fines are already high. For example, parking on yellow line around a school area is $113. I'm sure if people were aware of that fine, that would certainly deter people from parking illegally," he said.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said uniformed parking signs would also be rolled out across all schools, but he was unable to say exactly when this would occur.

In 2014 the council conducted a review of parking around Brisbane, with its Parking Taskforce handing down nine recommendations.

They included increasing parking enforcement around schools, providing free 15-minute parking in inner-city suburbs outside the CBD and placing less stringent restrictions on disabled drivers and their carers.
