Greens Senator Larissa Waters has hit out at what she describes as "growing sexism in the Queensland election campaign", accusing both major parties of ignoring women's issues.
And she criticised federal Liberal MP George Christensen who posted a cartoon of Queensland Labor Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk swinging naked on a wrecking ball - a parody of a Miley Cyrus music video clip.
Senator Waters said she had not spoken out about a similar cartoon published by News Corp last year because she hadn't seen it. On that occasion Palmer United Party leader Clive Palmer was depicted on a the front page in his underwear swinging on a wrecking ball.
"I don't think politicians ever need to be depicted without their clothes on, but I am particularly disturbed by [depictions of] female politicians," she said.
Senator Waters said neither the LNP nor Labor had taken a strong stance on combating family violence "despite the fact that Queensland has some of the highest rates of domestic violence in the country".
"Where are the announcements on funding for women's shelters? Where are the announcements on prevention and education and awareness?" she said.
"There aren't any in this state campaign other than from the Greens."
On Wednesday morning, Senator Waters was in King George Square with state lead spokesman Dr Charles Worringham and federal deputy leader Adam Bandt to announce the Greens' proposal to introduce a two-year daylight savings trial in Queensland followed by a referendum on the matter.
However Senator Waters' focus was on women's issues.
She said the Liberal Party culture at the state and federal levels marginalised women.
"We've also seen that [Premier] Campbell Newman is running with the slogan depicting the Opposition Leader and saying 'Don't wake up with regrets'," she said. Ms Waters described the slogan as having "clear sexual overtones".
"This sexism is totally inappropriate and sadly it goes to the views of the LNP when it comes to women. Perhaps they just don't think women deserve to be in the parliament.
"Mr Newman needs to be held to account for the slogan he chose to propagate...he could have stopped that from going ahead but he chose that not to."
