Mount Isa resident Lisa Ward is fundraising to take part in a charity bike ride from Melbourne to Adelaide, with the state member for Mount Isa one of the prizes on offer.
The 12,000 kilometre ride will take place from April 24 to May 2 and will cost Ms Ward $12,000 to participate.
Ms Ward said she had been riding since she moved to Mount Isa three years ago and, after discovering the Isa Rats triathlon club, she has been competing in races ever since.
“It’s a fundraiser to find a cure for cancer,” she said.
“They show the bike ride on Sunrise (Channel 7) every year and I thought ‘wow, I want to do that’.
“Every year they cycle to a different place and this year the 12,000-kilometre ride is estimated to take nine days.
“I think I’ll train really hard between now and then and I will be able to do it.
“The biggest challenge will be raising money and finding time to train.”
Ms Ward will hold a Cent Sale and Auction for Cure at the Buffs Club Saturday, January 31 from 6pm, in the Billabong Lounge.
Along with the cent sale there will be prizes up for auction along with a dinner date with Mr Katter for women and a dinner with Mount Isa City Councillor Kim Coghlan for the men.
Mr Katter said he enjoyed getting involved for charity.
“I’ve done a lot of things for charity but I do the easy part,” he said.
“I feel obligated to help because people like Lisa are doing all the hard yards.
“So I don’t want to seem like a big noter but I’m happy to help out.”
Tickets will be on sale for the Cent Sale and other prizes will be auctioned off along with live entertainment on the night.
Ms Ward thanked city businesses for helping with fundraising and planning.
