Students at Kingston State School found the weapon, believed to be a pistol, on the junior oval on Friday afternoon.

Principal Stephanie Crick said the gun was taken to the school office by the deputy principal.

"The Queensland Police were notified and attended the school. The pistol is now with Logan Police," she said in a statement on the school's website.

"The safety of your children is our top  priority and we ask parents and carers to be vigilant in reporting any instances of concern to our Administration Team immediately so appropriate actions and due process can and will be followed."

A police spokeswoman confirmed an air pistol was found at the school and handed in to local officers.
