The Mount Isa City Council-owned Cancer House will be leased to three groups with the goal  of providing support for people affected by cancer by bringing together the North West Queensland Prostate Support Group, North West Breast Cancer Support Group and Relay for Life under the one roof. 

Mayor Tony McGrady said the community-wide official opening of the Mount Isa Cancer House will showcase the newly renovated facility and welcome community members and groups.

“The Cancer House will be a home where people who have been diagnosed with cancer can meet with survivors and discuss what to expect with their treatment as well as the home providing a neutral environment for people to meet,” Cr McGrady said.

“Cancer can affect everyone, both young and old, and having so many people involved in making this facility the best it can be is of great benefit to Mount Isa.” 

Many local businesses and individuals have donated their time and resources into bringing this council initiative together and contributing to its success.

“Mount Isa Mines have provided air conditioning for the main lounge of the house and Bunnings along with many others have provided practical help including Mount Isa TAFE whose students renovated the house as part of one of its courses.”

Cr McGrady said the official opening will coincide with World Cancer Day, an initiative that takes a positive and proactive approach to the fight against cancer, highlighting that solutions do exist across the continuum of cancer, and that they are within our reach. 

“World Cancer Day and the work being done at Mount Isa’s own Cancer House is a unique opportunity to raise awareness that there is much that can be done at an individual, community and governmental level, in the areas of prevention, early detection, treatment and care,” 

The official opening will take place on February 4 at Cancer House (purple house) on Alma Street from 6pm.
