The clubs that shared the biggest stage last year said they were comfortable with a time change if it brought more money and viewers to the game.

While neither Hawthorn nor Sydney presumed to think they would be in the grand final this year, they said they were open to the changes, though were mindful of the impact on players from a longer half-time break.

"I don't mind the long break at half-time," said president Andrew Newbold whose Hawks have played in the past three grand finals and won the past two flags. "I think fitness people might have something to say about it in terms of cooling down, but I guess other sporting codes do it so I am sure that can be managed.

"I like the idea of the longer break because from an entertainment point of view it gives you more flexibility."

When asked for Hawthorn's position on the proposed changes, he said the extra revenue and TV audience of a twilight or night grand final and improved half-time entertainment would likely be compelling reasons to change.

"I get why the broadcasters want it and I am all for trying to make the game as entertaining as we can and getting more eyeballs on the game but I wonder if we are changing for the sake of changing it and do we have something that is better?

"I am not troubled by it and if it brings more money into the game for clubs and players, then we would not object to that. You don't want it on so late that kids can't go or stay up and watch it."

Swans chairman Andrew Pridham, whose Swans have played in two of the last three grand finals, said he too was open to the move.

"Without any presumption we will be in it, I think you do whatever makes most sense and whatever brings the most money into the game and brings the highest viewership to the game makes the most sense. Things change all the time," Pridham said.

"I have no objection to it. In terms of the longer half-time break if the football fraternity felt it was not going to in some way distort the way the game is played - and I can't see how it does - I think that would be ok."

Newbold's comments come after Collingwood president Eddie McGuire warned the AFL's premier game risked losing its place as the highest-rating game of the year unless it embraced change.

Host broadcaster Channel Seven also reinforced the push for a twilight or night grand final as part of the next media agreement and went further staking a claim for an extended half-time break to maximise a new focus on the mid-game entertainment.

The moves came after AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan and other AFL industry officials returned from the NFL Super Bowl excitedly talking of the experience and the scope and possibilities available to the AFL for its premier match.

"We shouldn't focus the thinking on the bounce time in isolation. Making sure we take into account player welfare, we should definitely be looking at every possible way we can to extend half-time," Channel Seven's chief Tim Worner told Fairfax Media last week.

"There is so much more we can do in that part of the telecast. And I don't mean Meatloaf."
