Riewoldt, 32, will surpass Danny Frawley's mark of nine years in the role when he leads the club this year. The man who captained St Kilda to consecutive grand finals in 2009 and 2010, was first appointed to lead the club in 2005 as part of Greant Thomas' rotation policy, and after sharing the mantle with Lenny Hayes and Luke Ball in 2007, has now been the standalone skipper for eight straight seasons.

Riewoldt will head up a seven-man leadership group, which is set to be announced on Tuesday morning.

Despite a dreary year for the Saints, Riewoldt enjoyed one of his finest seasons in 2014, claiming a sixth best and fairest award, as well as being named an All-Australian for the fifth time.

The 281-game forward kicked 49 goals last season, 31 majors clear of the next best Saint Rhys Stanley.

Riewoldt said he remained intent on leading the young St Kilda side off the bottom of the ladder.

"I am incredibly proud to be named captain of this great club for the 2015 season and I can't believe it's my 10th year in the role," he said.

"The vibe around the club is very positive and I think it's obvious to everyone that we have a clear plan and are going in the right direction."

"Our playing list is exciting but still very young so it's crucial for senior, established players to set the example and provide leadership for both on and off-field standards."

Coach Alan Richardson conceded the decision was a no-brainer.

"It really just came down to if he still had the passion for the role and, having spoken to him, there is no doubt he has the fire in the belly to lead," Richardson said.

"To be honest, it will be a healthy situation for the club if there are other strong young candidates putting up their hand for the captain's role in 2016 but Nick is definitely the right man to take us forward in 2015."

Frawley - who led St Kilda from 1987 until his retirement at the end of 1995 - will be at the club to see his mark fall, having come back to the Saints last year in a part-time role coaching the team's defenders. Frawley captained St Kilda in 177 games, a figure overhauled by Riewoldt in round 19 last year.
