There is no denying accusations of the magnitude pointed at Mr Cianetti must be fully investigated.
But it does set a worrying precedent that all accusations – no matter how vexatious and unsubstantiated – can be investigated at the cost of the ratepayer.
The outcome clearing the council of any wrongdoing validates Cr McGrady’s initial decision to dismiss the claims and slip them into his bottom drawer.
There should be transparency in local government but sometimes claims will be so far-fetched they do not warrant precious time spent on full investigations.
The mayor is in a position to make those judgment calls, and if some councillors had faith in his decision-making, and the reputation of the CEO, then the ratepayers would have been spared an audit bill in excess of $40,000 they can ill-afford in tough times.

ROB Katter’s time in the spotlight has certainly ensured his name is heard in Brisbane.
Some residents from the South East corner might not like some of his ideas – but they should be listening.
Mr Katter wants to unlock wealth-generating parts of the state to boost the economy, instead of spending billions on traffic tunnels.
Narrow-minded Brisbane residents might not understand how denying them five minutes less travel time will be of benefit to them.
The tunnel is not a smart way to spend money for a state in debt.
