Former Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority chief Richard Ings said the drug dramas involving Hunt had raised several issues, not the least being which sporting code had jurisdiction over the code-hopper from a drugs-in-sport perspective.

"It's not about this idea that the AFL or NRL has done this or that - these issues cut across sporting lines now," Ings said.

"It's not about an individual sport, it's about the community of sport. The issue I raise is this – do we need a national governmental integrity unit looking after all of sport? And we're not talking about some pencil pushers in the department of health, but an effective unit that can liaise with all the law-enforcement bodies to protect the integrity of sport at all different levels, whether it's drugs, match fixing, or whatever it is."

Hunt, the former AFL and NRL star now with the Queensland Reds rugby union side, is one of four people charged with supplying cocaine after an investigation by Queensland's Crime and Corruption Commission. The four allegedly arranged for cocaine for personal use or to be given to friends and colleagues between June and December last year. This period includes his final three months with the Suns and his pre-season with the Reds.

The QCCC did not wish to comment further on Saturday, while it's understood the AFL's integrity unit has not yet been sent to the Suns to investigate, but that could change depending on what details emerge.

It's also understood the Suns have not questioned any of their players about whether they had any knowledge of Hunt's alleged actions. The Suns have not been contacted by authorities.

The AFL and the Suns did not have any knowledge of the charges until they were publicly released on Friday.

As revealed by Fairfax Media on Saturday, the Australian Crime Commission has quietly abandoned plans to produce a new follow-up report to its explosive 2013 drugs-in-sport investigation, saying codes had acted to improve the "integrity" of sport.

But the arrest of Hunt and Gold Coast Titans duo Beau Falloon and Jamie Dowling on cocaine supply charges, and revelations that up to 100 people, including more than 10 Queensland footballers from the various codes, were under investigation as part of the same inquiry, will call into question the decision to cut short the wider probe.

A recommendation in the original "darkest day in Australian sport" report demanded a second report be delivered to the federal government by June 2015.

In August 2013, Fairfax Media reported that the then Home Affairs Minister, Jason Clare, had confirmed that the ACC intended to fulfil a recommendation to undertake a second report into the threat of illicit and performance-enhancing drugs.

The first report rocked the sporting world and led to scandal and suspensions at the Essendon AFL club and the Cronulla Sharks NRL club. The report revealed deep links between athletes and sporting codes and drug-dealing bikie gangs and other criminal syndicates.

In a statement, ACC chief executive Chris Dawson confirmed a second report was no longer necessary.

"The Australian Crime Commission continues to monitor the illicit drug market, including performance and image enhancing drugs (PIEDs), through its High Risk and Emerging Drugs Special Operation," he said.

"A further assessment of the threat of PIEDs to the sporting sector in Australia is not currently being completed by the ACC. Since the ACC's report, there have been a range of initiatives introduced by professional sporting bodies and codes in response to the identified problems, such as reform measures to improve integrity mechanisms to protect athletes and players from the identified risk of PIEDs and minimise the potential for harm to the industry.

"These efforts are reflected across the sporting industry in Australia."

Former World Anti-Doping Agency president John Fahey declined to comment on the ACC's backflip. However, he questioned how much the NRL had done to improve it's anti-doping protocols following the so-called "darkest day in Australian sport".

"They indicated two years ago they were going to beef up their program and they may well have, but I haven't seen any details of it," Fahey said. "I hope they have."

Hunt is expected to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on March 5.

Regardless of the court case, Hunt could also find himself the subject of an ASADA probe as cocaine is regarded as a performance-enhancing drug.
