Lord Mayor Graham Quirk will put the bid on the agenda at the next South East Queensland Council of Mayors meeting early next month, saying the entire region needed to back the proposal.

While it is early days for the plan, Brisbane has already won the support of the Australian Olympic Committee's John Coates who described the River City as the "natural choice" as host city.

"I think that Brisbane would be the obvious choice for the next Australian Olympic bid," Cr Quirk said.

"As Australia's new world city, I think we've demonstrated that we are capable of staging a world event – staging it safely, successfully and with attention to detail."

Cr Quirk said any bid would require the financial backing of the state and Commonwealth governments.

Some International Olympic Committee estimations put the cost of the 2012 London Olympics at $30 billion.

"The reality with any Olympic bid is that we would simply be a cooperating partner as a city authority," Cr Quirk said.

"The resourcing would come through the federal and state governments."

Cr Quirk said the bidding for the international event would not be carried out by Brisbane alone, with any pitch to be made to the IOC to come on behalf of the south east Queensland region.

"One of the benefits we have is that we have a body called the Council of Mayors for South East Queensland and we have great cooperation between mayors, and represent one in seven Australians," he said.

"Any bid that would be put forward would not just be about Brisbane City alone but one that would incorporate and involve the mayors of south east Queensland."

The SEQ Council of Mayors incorporates 12 councils from the region, including Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Ipswich, Logan, the Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba.

Cr Quirk said the potential bid would be raised at the body's next meeting on March 6.
