“Water meters have a life cycle of five years before they have to be replaced,” council chief executive Emilio Cianetti said at Wednesday’s council meeting,
“We have a program where we replace them as they come up faulty and when they reach the end of their life we then look at a program to replace a series of them and we go right through the city.
“At the moment there is a list from financial services saying that these are not functioning.
“We are targeting major users first and then working our way down from that priority list.’’
Mayor Tony McGrady said the council would check meters and if it was discovered the water meter was under-reading, a new one would be installed, resulting in an increased but correct recording of water consumption.
“When you get a new meter in it gets the correct reading but as time goes on and the older the meter gets it slows down and records a lesser amount of water usage,” he said.
