MOUNT Isa isn’t renowned as a breeding ground for racehorses, but that hasn’t stopped Jim Nuttall trying his luck with Down’s Ridge.

In a rarity for Mount Isa racing, Nuttall’s locally born-and-bred three-year-old will make his racetrack debut at Buchanan Park on Saturday.
Down’s Ridge, sired by Pembroke and out of Shaqino, will be bred and raced by Nuttall.
Down’s Ridge’s trainer, Bob Burow, said he was optimistic of the first starter’s ability.
He admitted it was hard to get a guide on the talent the gelding might have, with there being no opportunity to test gallopers before they race in Mount Isa.
“He’s got a bit of ability but we’ll have to see how he goes,” Burow said.
“We don’t have the chance to barrier trial them in Mount Isa.”
Most horses racing in Mount Isa and the North West are cast-offs from stronger racing capitals in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
But Burow hopes growing up in Mount Isa will be an edge for Down’s Ridge.
“One thing is for sure, he’ll be a lot tougher from growing up in Mount Isa,” Burow laughed.
“He should be better acclimatised than the others.”
Down’s Ridge will contest the Breast Cancer Awareness QTIS Maiden Plate (900metres).
Burow will also saddle up Nicabelle in the Class B Handicap (900m).
“She’s about four or five weeks into her preparation so it would’ve been good to give her a bit more time, but she’s a place chance,” he said.
The Damien Finter-trained Firstinbestdressed was an impressive winner in December last year at Buchanan Park and is likely to be one of the main fancies.
The main race of the day will be the Open Handicap (1000m) with Rocket On By, Tuatara and Buffett returning to the racetrack.
