The successful groups will receive funding for initiatives to improve the way of life of thousands of north Queenslanders were announced on Wednesday.
The GCPNQ, now in its 11th year, awards funding each year to address the areas of most need identified by north Queensland communities through the Glencore Community Attitudes Survey, held in Mount Isa, Camooweal, Cloncurry, Townsville and Bowen every two years.
Since 2005, the GCPNQ has contributed more than $30 million towards projects to improve health, education and liveability outcomes and artistic and cultural enrichment across north Queensland.
This includes multimillion-dollar investments in the development of community and social infrastructure to improve access to critical health services, affordable housing, and lifestyle and recreational facilities, particularly in the north west.
Chief operating officer for Glencore’s north Queensland copper assets Mike Westerman said the GCPNQ is based on the company’s belief that communities should benefit from its operations both in the short and long term.
“The strength of our community funding program lies in the fact that the program directly addresses the areas of most concern to local people, and places an emphasis on local capacity building to help develop strong, sustainable communities,” Mr Westerman said.
