A loss to Black Stars on Saturday is likely to deny Cavaliers second spot, relegating the side to third on the ladder and without a second chance in next week’s semi finals.
But Cavaliers all-rounder Luke Gowing says his side will go into the clash confident they can cause an upset.
“Black Stars haven’t looked like losing all year, but this is Mount Isa cricket – anything can happen,” he said.
“We want the double bite at the cherry in the finals.”
Black Stars are unbeaten all season, including the Twenty20 series.
If the Cavaliers succumb to the powerhouse outfit of the competition, and Townview beat the Western Bulls on Sunday, Cavaliers will drop to third spot and face Panthers in next week’s finals clash.
The competition’s top-scorer with 649 runs for the season, Black Stars captain Kyle Keighery is the obvious danger man for Cavaliers.
“He’s the player we need to get out cheaply,” Gowing said.
Cavaliers fielded their strongest line-up of the year last time they played Black Stars and were trounced.
Gowing hopes the side can produce a better performance and cause an upset.
“We always go into the game thinking we can win,” he said.
The blockbuster clash between Cavaliers and Black Stars will be played at Sunset Oval on Saturday.
Panthers have already sewn up the fourth and final spot in the competition, and take on the Isa Challengers at Captain Cook Oval on Saturday.
On Sunday, the Western Bulls will have only pride to play for when they face Townview at Sunset Oval.
Townview can snare second spot in the competition and a double chance for finals if they win, and Cavaliers lose to Black Stars.
