Backing from the 11 other councils in the region is the first step of many that will be needed to get an official Brisbane bid off the ground.

"This is not something that's going to be occurring overnight. There is a long, long way to go in terms of this journey," Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said on Friday afternoon.

"As a region we have a great offering and we believe that collectively we ought to now commence discussions at other levels. We'll be advising the Australian Olympic Committee...the Queensland Government and Australian Government of our interest in having further discussions around this."

Cr Quirk confirmed he would try meet with International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach, who is expected to be in Brisbane next month.

"He will be in Brisbane for about two hours and I'm certainly taking steps to be meeting with him on behalf of [South East Queensland] Council of Mayors," Cr Quirk said.

"It's not costing anybody any money at this time. We're just simply looking at the early stages of this and we'll take it one step at a time."

Details of what new infrastructure is needed, where Games events would be held, or even which month the event would occur in have not been determined.

Last month, Cr Quirk championed Brisbane and South East Queensland as a suitable Olympics host after Mr Bach implied that the city was one of three in Australia capable of hosting the Games.

A formal Olympic expression of interest does not need to be lodged by early 2019. The official bids will be lodged by the end of that year.
