Labor is looking to save the Executive Building from demolition so it can avoid moving into the monolith planned by the Newman government to represent the might of the Queensland government, 1 William Street.

One of the first orders of the previous government was to enter into a public-private partnership to have a new "tower of power", built opposite the Queensland Parliament building, to house government ministers and their top public servants under the one roof.

Currently, ministers and their senior staff are spread across the city in a variety of buildings.

The LNP planned to raze the Executive Building, which was opened by Bjelke-Petersen in 1971 and built in the brutalist style that came to mark his influence on Brisbane's architectural design, as part of the proposed Queen's Wharf development.

Last week, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said there were some "issues" she wanted investigated with the proposed resort and casino development before the Labor government made a decision on its future.

On Monday she revealed one of those issues was in relation to "whether or not we would be able to keep the Executive Building as part of the Queen's Wharf development".

"I have asked the department to actually get some further advice into that," she said.

"My understanding is that the bids have progressed quite a substantial way at the moment, but I did ask a question about whether this Executive Building could remain."

While in opposition, Labor railed hard against the 1 William Street project, accusing then-premier Campbell Newman of wanting to boost his ego.

The LNP argued the Executive Building and other ministerial dwellings were outdated and could no longer serve their intended purposes.

It put the majority of those buildings on the market, with most having been sold.

But given how hard Labor argued against the building, which was used as an example of the LNP's Brisbane-centric attitude during Labor's election campaigning in north Queensland, Ms Palaszczuk hinted she had to at least ask whether it could avoid the move.

But Labor can't scuttle the building's development.

"One William Street is obviously still going ahead," she said of the partially completed building.

"But I was looking at whether or not the Executive Building could be kept out of the development. The department is coming back to me, but my understanding from those initial conversations is that the proposals have advanced [beyond that]."

Both the shortlisted consortiums, led by competing Australian casino players Crown developments, headed by James Packer and Echo Entertainment, owner of the existing Treasury Casino, have released detailed plans regarding the development.

Given the scope of the designs, incorporating the aged Executive Building into their plans would potentially require both to head back to the drawing board.
