The Townsville Fire overcame a horror start to score a 75-65 home grand final win on Sunday.
Assistant coach Claudia Brassard is spearheading the tour through the shires of Cloncurry and McKinlay that also features triple Olympian Suzy Batkovic, along with Fire teammates Cayla Francis, Jillian Harmon, Kate Gaze, Stephanie Cumming, Rosie Fadljevic and Alex Wilson.
The two-day tour will incorporate four school visits through the Cloncurry, Julia Creek and Dajarra communities on behalf of major sponsor BHP Billiton Cannington.
The trip to North West Queensland will see the Fire deliver a raft of community activities with an emphasis on leadership and making positive life choices.
Three-time reigning WNBL MVP Batkovic said the tour was an extraordinary opportunity for the Fire to meet directly with students and share some insights from North Queensland’s most successful national team.
“The club is really looking forward to touring these communities,” Batkovic said.
“Having grown up in regional Australia - and playing for a community-based club - there’s nothing quite as rewarding as being able to share your experience with school kids.
“We all need role models to look up to, and if we can make a positive impact in the life of just one student, it will be a really successful tour.
“Who knows, we may even unearth the next Fire star.”
The Fire will depart Townsville to Mount Isa on Wednesday morning before delivering school visits at St Joseph’s Cloncurry, Cloncurry State School and Dajarra State School.
The Fire will also work with the Cloncurry PCYC before delivering a fourth school visit at Julia Creek State School on Thursday before returning to Townsville.
Cannington Asset president Peter Sharpe said they were delighted to be bringing the JCU Townsville Fire to North West Queensland.
“Cannington has had a great relationship with the Fire over the years,” Mr Sharpe said.
“Visits like this are a rare opportunity for both our local students and also the team.
“The Townsville Fire players are terrific role models and they are an excellent example of what can be achieved through hard work and dedication. We’re sure everyone will get something from these sessions.”
