Her open heart surgery followed two emergency plane flights and life-saving stays in four hospitals at Mt Isa, Townsville, Brisbane and finally Newcastle.

Little Mia, then living in Mt Isa with her mum, dad and three-year old sister Maddison, stopped breathing on Valentine's Day, February 14.

Mia was then only seven days old. She had suffered a heart attack caused by a narrowing of her aorta.

Luckily her mother Kelly Jo quickly realised Mia was in trouble.

"It is hot in Mt Isa and the air conditioning was on," Kelly Jo said.

"She was in her swing and she was asleep and she just had a little bunny rug on her. I wanted to check her because I did not want her to be cold," she said.

"I checked her and she was warm, but there was just something that told me to listen because she just didn't look right.

"I just listened and couldn't hear any breathing and pulled her out of her swing and ran out into the street screaming."

Her husband Cody Wall, an underground miner, had taken Maddison to swimming classes.

The couple had only just moved into their house in Mt Isa days before.

"Neighbours came running and I remember a man in a blue shirt who started CPR on Mia," Kelly-Jo said.

"He's my saviour. I had no idea why she'd stopping breathing," Kelly-Jo said.

Emergency paramedics Gavin Becker and Amanda Martin arrived quickly and treated Mia in the couple's Mt Isa home, with help from fire officers Lieutenant Peter Burlingham, Tina Monukua, Sarah Steinegg and John Whiting.

The Walls were told Mia had an undiagnosed heart condition and had suffered a sudden cardiac arrest.

Paramedics from Queensland's fire and emergency services took over the resuscitation work from the neighbour, and Mia was taken to Mt Isa Base Hospital.

Here, her condition was stabilised and the Royal Flying Doctor Service was contacted to take Mia to Townsville where specialists first diagnosed her heart problem.

From Townsville, Mia was taken to Brisbane's new children's hospital, the Lady Cilento Hospital at South Brisbane, where she had open heart surgery at just 14 days of age.

Mia will be five weeks old on Saturday.

"Doctors are calling her a little miracle baby," Kelly Jo said.

"She's come such a long way."

After almost four weeks at the Lady Cilento Hospital Mia and Kelly Jo on Friday arrived at Newcastle Hospital.

The Wall family is shifting to Gloucester in New South Wales to be closer to their families and Newcastle Hospital is the nearest hospital with the facilities Mia needs.

After being in hospital for four of her five weeks of life, Mia may finally be released from hospital on Saturday or Monday.

"So not that much longer," Kelly Jo said.

"She just has to build up her strength to feed, but she's sucking and swallowing and breathing and she's doing really well with that routine."

"She still has a long way to go, but considering she was unresponsive, she has come a long way. From where she has come from to where she is now she is doing very well."

Kelly Jo Wall, 28, is thankful her neighbours, the paramedics and the firefighters all had CPR skills.

"I think it's important to reinforce the CPR message as well because it helps keep the blood pumping," she said.

"Mia is still with us because of the work of the paramedics and firefighters did, as well as our neighbours who helped."

"I can't thank them enough."

Fire crews in Mt Isa receive additional CPR training so they can help paramedics when they are first on the scene.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Inspector Ross Mutzelburg praised the efforts of the auxiliary firefighters in helping to save Mia's life.

"It is upsetting working on an infant but it was a fantastic effort, particularly with the auxiliary crew there to assist the paramedics," he said.
