The Newman Government announced it would overturn the long-time ban on uranium mining in 2012 and opened applications in August 2014.

Queensland's Mary Kathleen Mine, near Mount Isa, closed in 1982, seven years before uranium mining was banned in the state.

Campbell Newman announced the state would once again open its uranium resources to the world, following then-Prime Minister Julia Gillard setting in motion plans to export Australian uranium to India.

His Mines Minister, Andrew Cripps, said mining uranium "will help ensure we remain Australia's job powerhouse for the long term".

"The uranium industry has the potential to generate significant development in North Queensland, as well as royalties to fund school and health services, roads and public infrastructure," he said in August last year.

"Each new uranium project has the potential to create a large number of construction and operational jobs."

But while in Opposition, Labor was against overturning the ban, an attitude Mr Cripps had labelled "ideological", but a spokesman for the new government said uranium mining would once again be kiboshed in Queensland.

Mr Cripps said it would not have any impact.

"The Department of Natural Resources and Mines has not received one single application for a uranium mining lease since the previous LNP government's regulatory framework for uranium mining started on 31 July 2014," he said.

The Queensland Resources Council, who at the time of the LNP overturning the ban labelled it as setting the stage "for development of a multi-billion, world class" industry, declined to comment on Labor's intention to once again ban uranium mining, saying it would wait until it released its policy.
