1985 NBL win

When basketball was leading all comers, the Brisbane Bullets claimed their first title, under super coach Brian Kerle. In the days of CJ Bruton and Larry Sengstock, the Bullets were pulling crowds and gaining swag. The 120-95 grand final win over the Adelaide 36ers saw them move out of Chandler and into the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. It was the last time the grand final was a one-off game but the hot-favourite Bullets didn't need a series to claim their maiden title.

1994-95 Sheffield Shield win

This is the ultimate Queensland drought-breaker. Twenty years on, the 1994-95 Shield win is still a touch point for anyone talking about Queensland cricket and even Queensland sport. The Bulls have gone on to win more titles in various forms since then but that drought-breaker is the one that gave people that "where were you when ..." moment. After Queensland had waited 68 years, Carl Rackemann snatched the final scalp, catching Jason Gillespie, and the Queenslanders in attendance poured on to the pitch. Police on horses shepherded the Gabba crowd that poured on to the ground. The highlights packages also feature displays of questionable facial hair from Allan Border and Stuart Law.

1996-97 Brisbane Strikers NSL win

The Brisbane Strikers took the first national football title to go Queensland's way in a game that announced football as a force in Australia. Back when player-coaches were still in the ranks, Frank Farina did the dual role proud, scoring in the milestone win. Brisbane turned out for the game as well, with 40,446 packing out Lang Park. Farina and Rod Brown, whose son Corey now plays for the Roar, finished the work in a 2-0 win over Sydney United.

2001 Brisbane Lions premiership

They had to give up home finals and combat Eddie McGuire's whingeing but the Brisbane Lions gained a place in history with a hat-trick of premierships. Leigh Matthews evoked Predator, saying, 'If it bleeds, we can kill it', ahead of their round-10 clash with Essendon. From there, the Lions went undefeated for the rest of the year, as Jason Akermanis collected a Brownlow along the way. The fact that this first Brisbane Lions premiership was followed by two more over Collingwood was icing on the cake in Queensland sports history.

2006 Queensland Origin win

 

After a three-year dominance of the series by NSW, Queensland's spiritual hold on the State of Origin was slipping. Enter Mal Meninga and the newest golden generation of Queensland stars. After a one-point loss in game one, the Maroons nabbed a series win on neutral ground, beginning the greatest State of Origin run in history. Darren Lockyer was the hero, with an intercept try nabbing the 14-10 win in game three. It was a golden age for Queensland rugby league as they romped to eight straight series wins. Looking back now it's hard to believe Queensland was ever second best in the Origin rivalry, despite their eight-year run ending in 2014.

Queensland Firebirds 2011 championship

This was the season the Firebirds came to life as a netball franchise. Queensland had been forever a mid-tabling team. A perfect season is near impossible to achieve but they did, finishing with an emphatic win over the Mystics, 57-44. A season-ending injury to captain Lauren Nourse gave the Queenslanders all the motivation they needed as they won every game on their way to the 2011 championship. Since that win, the Firebirds have become a powerhouse of the competition, making grand finals in two of the three seasons since.

Queensland Reds 2011 championship 

 

Queensland rugby fans had suffered for an age leading up to the 2011 win. A restructure of their executive and coaching departments and tortured Queensland rugby fans were able to savour that moment after talented teams had gone before them without a trophy for their efforts. Will Genia's sneaky step and runaway try to take the victory for Queensland is etched into the memory of Reds and, hopefully, Crusaders fans.

Brisbane Roar 2010-11 win

Brisbane Roar added another momentous night to Suncorp Stadium's history in the 2011 A-League grand final. It was epic, too. After a 2-2 draw after extra time, a 4-2 win on penalties secured a maiden win for Brisbane Roar. It also kick-started a year of significant wins for Queensland teams, the likes of which the state hasn't seen since. The win cemented the profile of Ange Postecoglou and Brisbane's favourite Albanian-German duo, Thomas Broich and Besart Berisha. That would be the first of three titles that the club would win in four seasons.
