Applications for the position have officially opened, with the government seeking "a judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland or another State, the High Court of Australia or the Federal Court of Australia".

During the election campaign Annastacia Palaszczuk made it clear she would replace acting Crime and Corruption chair Ken Levy as a matter of urgency.

While in Opposition Ms Palaszczuk questioned Dr Levy's links to the Newman Government.

The situation worsened when Dr Levy was investigated by the CCC parliamentary oversight committee over claims he had misled it.

The government then sacked the PCCC, which had been chaired by an independent MP and made one of its own MPs chair, which gave the government the deciding vote in any split decisions.

The LNP set up a select ethics committee, chaired by its own MP, to investigate whether Dr Levy had misled the PCCC.

The outcome of that investigation was never finalised, as it waited for a police investigation on the same matter to be finished.

The LNP had attempted to replace Dr Levy with a permanent chair late last year, but Labor moved to veto their choice.

Labor's preferred candidate will also need bipartisan support with Ms Palaszczuk saying last week she would discuss the matter with Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg.

Ms Palaszczuk has also committed to having a non-government MP chair the Parliamentary Crime and Corruption Committee.

But while the government has promised a "strong" crime watchdog "beholden to no one", it is keeping some things under wraps.
