By the same measure, there are players you're not so keen on, who you know you will let slide to the opposition because for one reason or another you just don't want them on your team.

These are the dos and the don'ts, the players you want, and the players you don't want. We all have our own dos and don'ts, but before you embark on your fantasy drafts, let me share with you a few of mine for season 2015.

DOS

Todd Goldstein

I love my numbers and Goldstein has some very exciting ones. An average of 87 fantasy points last year might not "wow" you right off the bat, but when you take a closer look, things get a bit more interesting.

In round one last year Goldstein copped an injury to his shoulder. Being so important to North Melbourne's structure, he played through the pain in the next couple of months, but it badly affected his fantasy scoring.

In his first 10 games of the year, he averaged just 79 fantasy points per game, and had just one score over 100 in this time.

However, he improved as the year went on, and once his shoulder recovered he was flying with some of the best form of his career. In his 11 remaining home and away appearances, he averaged 99 points per game, and didn't have a single score below 80.

In my view, Goldstein is set to continue this form into 2015, which makes him a player well worth drafting. Most drafters will pick Adelaide's Sam Jacobs before him, and when I see someone in my draft taking Jacobs, I'm taking that as my cue to draft Goldstein with my next pick.

Jack Newnes

There weren't a whole lot of highlights for St Kilda fans in 2014 – though their win over Fremantle is pretty memorable – but the good form of youngster Jack Newnes was certainly one of them. He left fantasy coaches with a smile on their faces, too.

Newnes had the typical third-year breakout that keen fantasy coaches are always watching for. His third year showed a significant lift in all the major categories – disposals, marks, tackles – and thus saw a big increase in his Ultimate Footy scoring as well.

Often the concern with a player who is coming off a breakout year is whether or not they can back it up. Was it a genuine breakout, or was it just a flash in the pan?

Well, I'm throwing my weight behind Newnes to say not only will he back it up, he will go even further in 2015.

The best fantasy defenders are those who spend time in the midfield, and the Saints have earmarked Newnes to spend a lot more time there in 2015. This should see all his key stats continue to increase, and his fantasy scores with them.

His score of 101 points in Thursday night's loss to Hawthorn just goes to show that he can rack up the points even when the team is getting absolutely thumped.

I reckon he could end this season as one of the top few fantasy defenders, so taking him in your draft after the current top-flight guys have been snapped up will prove a bargain.

Toby Greene

Toby Greene inspires a wide variety of reactions in footy fans and fantasy coaches alike.

Some absolutely love him, and it's not hard to see why. He's been an absolute ball magnet from day one, and his ability to notch huge fantasy scores is reminiscent of fantasy kings Dane Swan and Tom Rockliff.

That said, he has had his fair share of detractors, and they're not speaking without reason.

His second year in the competition was disappointing, he was played out of his role a lot and really struggled.

That, combined with a five-week lay-off in 2014 for an incident at a Melbourne nightclub is enough to make any fantasy coach wary of picking him.

I can see the issue from both sides, but personally, I'm weighing in on the "pick him" side.

To put it very simply, guys with Greene's scoring power do not simply appear every day. He is something special. When I ask myself who will be the No.1 fantasy player in the league five years down the track, his is the first name to come to mind.

DON'TS

Tom Mitchell

Mitchell is in a similar class to that of Toby Greene. Simply put, he is an amazing ball winner. His debut game, in round 10 2013, saw him collect 98 points – as the sub! And the following week he scored a ridiculous 144.

So, he ticks the first box – yes, he can score big.

Mitchell finished 2013 in ripping form and was one of the best young fantasy prospects at the end of the year. To make things even brighter, he was given forward eligibility for 2014. It's no surprise that people were taking him very early in fantasy drafts when 2014 rolled around.

However, if you did, you would've been disappointed. Mitchell played the first four games of the year, then was dropped and didn't return until round 22. Even after a remarkable effort of 29 disposals and 13 tackles against the Tigers in round 23, he was dropped again on the eve of finals.

Mitchell's ability to put up numbers is incredible. But no matter how high those numbers are, they simply are not going to do your fantasy team any good if he is putting them up in the NEAFL.

While there's every chance that Mitchell can crack his way back into the Swans side this year, he hasn't been getting much centre time in the NAB Challenge and that to me suggests that the Swans selection panel is still a bit iffy about him.

It may be a bit harsh, but you just can't afford to use an earlyish pick on a guy who might not get games.

Allen Christensen

Let's not get this confused. I am a big fan of Allen Christensen. He impressed me greatly in his 2013 season and, like a lot of fantasy coaches, I looked at him at the start of 2014 and believed he was ready for big things.

It was not to be. A back injury sidelined him for the first 10 games of the season, and then he missed Geelong's finals campaign when it flared up again.

Over the off season Christensen moved to Brisbane, looking for a fresh start, and fantasy coaches like myself have been very excited about the prospect. At the Lions you'd figure he could see a bit more time in the midfield and get back to his best footy, or even better.

However, those hopes have taken a hit over the past few days with the news that the Lions are planning to take the softly-softly approach to Christensen's season. Justin Leppitsch admitted that Christensen will probably need to be managed throughout the year.

For me, if an AFL coach doesn't have full confidence in his players, then neither do I. While this is by no means a death sentence on Christensen's 2015 season – and I certainly hope he can have a good year - it's enough for me to look at other options and let him slide to someone more willing to take the risk.

Andrew Walker

Over the past two years Andrew Walker has been a solid option for your fantasy back line, impressing in the new role he was given when Mick Malthouse arrived at the club prior to the 2013 season.

His past two seasons have presented averages of 86 and 83, the two highest of his career.

While they're not enough to place him among the upper echelon of fantasy defenders, they've been enough to make him a solid guy to pick as your second or third defender.

So, it's not his scoring ability that's the problem. It's his knee. Last year, Walker missed the last six games of the season with a knee injury, and, to make matters worse, he hasn't been sighted since.

It's often said that no news is good news, but when a player is on the road of recovery, that is not so much the case. We've barely heard a peep out of Carlton all off-season regarding Walker, and at the moment, he's still listed as four weeks away on the AFL's injury list.

This is a time frame that just seems to keep extending itself, and I don't think we can nail down with any certainty at this point just when we will see Walker playing AFL footy this season. Even when he does return, he'll definitely be rusty.

The whole situation just leaves me with a lack of confidence. Personally, I'm letting him slide on by to be someone else's headache.
