Fremantle star Nat Fyfe showed that he's primed for the start of the 2015 season as he played a major role in the 19-point win over West Coast on Sunday .
Last year's Brownlow Medal runner-up showed better touch than any of his peers at Domain Stadium. And he added a spark in the third term that set up Fremantle's NAB Challenge victory, despite a late West Coast comeback.
Fyfe, who played four games less than Brownlow medallist Matt Priddis in 2014 and finished one vote behind the Eagle, finished with 29 touches. He had 25 of those at three-quarter-time and spend a bit of the final term on the bench.
He kicked one of the Dockers four third-term goals, after taking a spectacular high mark close to goal, and set up teammates Tom Sheridan and Zac Clarke for their majors in the same quarter.
The Dockers led by 13 points at half-time and 29 points at the final break. The margin blew out as much as 35 points during the term
The new-look Eagles defence was a little flattered by the scoreline, with Fremantle kicking 2.7 in the second term from 12 entries into attack.
With Eric Mackenzie out for the season with a knee injury and Mitch Brown rested, Elliot Yeo and Jeremy McGovern took up key defensive roles. Yeo did a fair job on Matthew Pavlich, keeping him to just nine touches, one mark and one behind in the opening half.
The Dockers skipper did have a hand in a couple of scoring opportunities though, and finished with two goals.
West Coast's attack, which had struggled in the opening three terms, came alive in the final term. And it was the two players the Eagles need to shine in the absence of Jack Darling who got them going.
Josh Kennedy marked and kicked a goal less than two minutes into the term. It was his third major for the afternoon – and considering he also kicked two behinds, it wasn't a bad afternoon.
Mark LeCras then kicked two goals in the space of a few minutes. And when Scott Selwood slotted through a major after being awarded a 50m penalty, the margin was only four points.
Late goals to Pavlich and Clarke sealed the result.
It was Selwood's first run for the pre-season and importantly he seemed to get through unscathed, with 22 touches. Nic Naitanui also made his first appearance and while he played mainly in attack, he finished the game in the ruck after Scott Lycett was subbed out of the game.
Also for the first time in the pre-season, the Dockers rolled out Aaron Sandilands who was very quiet before being subbed out in the final term.
Fremantle looks certain to be without Nick Suban for their round one clash with Port Adelaide. He was subbed out early in the contest with a hamstring injury while Hayden Crozier limped off in the final term.
