The terminal is the second to be unveiled in 2015, following the opening of the new Milton facility in January. The Brisbane City Council says it will deliver 11 new or renovated terminals by the middle of the year.

The Regatta terminal features a flood-resilient pontoon and a 75-tonne, 11-metre high pier which was designed to deflect debris away from the terminal.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the new terminal would also be easier to access for people with disabilities or those pushing strollers and prams.

"The gangway is designed to maintain intermediate level landings even as the river rises and falls – and this accessible design is a key feature in all 11 ferry terminal projects," he said.

"It also features an accessible ramp on the pontoon from the gangway to the boarding gate, improved lighting, tactile signage and ground surface indicators for improved wayfinding and continuous handrails along the handrail and pontoon."

A temporary terminal, built to pre-flood standards, was constructed when the Regatta facility was badly damaged during the 2011 floods.

The upgrade was funded by the council, state and federal governments.
