A man and woman in their 70s were struggling to cross the road near Isa and Camooweal streets on Monday, trying to cope with a broken wheel on the man’s wheelchair.

A class of Spinifex State College students on a bus after swimming lessons noticed the trouble.

Teacher Kristen Curd stopped the bus and four year 12 students – Korey Trott, Chris Graue, Clayton Clarke and Brock Staunton – went to the pair’s aid.

They quickly offered assistance after seeing the elderly woman struggling to lift the wheelchair.

The students helped the pair, carrying the man to the Queensland Country Credit Union where the pair could sit and organise a new wheelchair. 

“He was pretty worried when we got there and a bit distressed ... He was a little bit embarrassed but happy we came to help him,” Brock said.

“They were surprised and thankful ... they said they didn’t know what they would’ve done if we weren’t there.

“It’s important to help each other out, even if you don’t know them.

“We’re just glad that we were there to help out.

“I’d love to see more people not be afraid and stand up and give a hand to those in need.”

The boys said it was frustrating that some other people drove past the couple.

“You don’t see that kind of thing a lot these days ...  it was sad to see some people just kept on driving past,” Korey said.

Ms Curd said she was proud of her students.

She said when she told the parents of the boys of their good deed, they were emotional and full of pride.

“I was very proud of the class for helping the couple and even prouder to not have to tell them what to do to assist,” she said.
