The Mount Isa Athletic Club starts this weekend with the 2015 athletics season sign-on to be held this Sunday from 10am till 1pm at Sunset Oval.
The Mount Isa and District Athletics Association is currently North Queensland’s fourth biggest club and caters for all age groups.
Club organiser Ken Dickson says there is no age limit upwards making it one of the few sports where the whole family can compete at the same time and place.
“We are lucky to have a number of adults who train and compete and it is wonderful for the kids to see their parents ‘have a go’,” he said.
If volunteer numbers permit on Sunday, the club will have one of their two level 3 coaches along with a couple of new trainee coaches to entertain new members.
There will be crash courses prepared in some of the athletic events so new athletes feel a little more confident come season start.
The first club competition day will be on Saturday, April 25, from 2pm.
Dickson said if anyone is able to offer assistance with set-up from 1pm on club days it would be greatly appreciated.
Athletics is open to anyone turning five years old in 2015 right through to masters.
The club also caters for budding athletes turning four years who are also able to join the Tiny Tots age group where events are modified to suit their age, however, no recordings are kept for this age group.
Extra parental supervision is also essential for this group.
New athletes in all ages will need to bring along a copy of their birth certificate for sighting when registering.
The Mount Isa club boasts an impressive array of equipment for an outback town.
They offer all the usual events as well as some of the not so common ones such as hammer throw and pole vault.
In addition, a number of the teen and master athletes are heavily into the multi events such as decathlon and heptathlon.
“If there is something you have always wanted to try, no matter what your age or ability, then come on down and have a look,” Dickson said.
In case you can’t make it this Sunday, there will also be a second sign-on on the last weekend of the school holidays, Saturday April 18, with the same start and finish times.
