Fire crews were called to the pub about 1am to find the pub razed with fire.

There were no injuries reported but some people had to evacuate the area.

The fire comes only weeks out from the town’s biggest event, the Julia Creek Dirt and Dust triathlon, which draws thousands of people to the town.

Gannon’s Hotel was originally built in 1925 but burnt down in 1930. The pub featured in a 1956 film version of A Town Like Alice.

Auxiliary firefighters from Julia Creek and Cloncurry battled this blaze along with firefighters from Mount Isa, who had the task of dampening down the remnants of the pub.

Police investigators were on scene to investigate the cause of the blaze.
