About 100 people attended the event where Mount Isa Police and Emergency Services provided a fun and interactive event that showed the seriousness of how long it takes to brake at different speeds and in different vehicles.  

The event was held at Buchanan Park and allowed participants the chance to chalk their name in the car park, saying where they thought the car would stop when breaking at different speeds. 

District crime prevention co-ordinator Sergeant Cath Purcell said police demonstrated the difference of emergency braking at different speeds.  

“Stopping at 60km/h is very different to stopping at 40km/h, and when you get a chance like this to compare the distances, you can visibly see why school zones are so important, and the impact that they make,” she said. 

Sergeant Purcell said emergency services did a great presentation of a road crash trauma scene and thanked those in the community that helped make the night a success. 

“There are a lot of people in our community who believe in community safety as much as we do, and we’d like to thank them for their involvement and support,” she said. 

“We hope that this has made an impact, and created a greater awareness of the dangerous consequences of speeding.  

“Easter can be a busy time for emergency services, but if events like this save just one life, or prevent one accident, then this is all worth it.”

Mount Isa Police hope to hold a similar event around September school holidays giving more residents a chance to attend.
