Mr Katter and fellow KAP MP Shane Knuth met with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Treasurer Curtis Pitt on Monday as Labor tries to do a deal for their support in parliament.
Labor needs the backing of Katter and fellow KAP MP Knuth to govern after the premier sacked Cape York-based Cook MP Billy Gordon from the party over domestic abuse allegations and his undisclosed criminal record.
Mr Katter admitted the Labor government would have to do better than what they’ve delivered since coming to power if it wants the vote of the two KAP MPS.
“It’s been frustrating to date,” Mr Katter lamented of the KAP’s relationship with Labor in recent months.
Mr Katter said Labor had little interest in talking to KAP MPs before it was revealed Mr Gordon was sacked.
“We knew right from the start that Labor would need us over the next three years,” he said.
Mr Katter said Labor also approached the KAP to deal on a “working agreement” before a confidence motion in Annastacia Paluszczuk’s government passed 44 votes to 42.
The two Katter party MPs abstained from the vote, saying the government deserved a chance to show it could govern effectively, but it was too soon to back the confidence motion.
‘‘We believe it is too early to give a vote of confidence in this government at this stage,’’ Mr Knuth said.
‘‘ ... there are many issues that have been spelt out that need to be addressed in rural and regional Queensland.’’
