EUROS flanker (and notable Ladies Day player auction showboat) Corey Carlson showed some brilliant cross-code skill in his team’s win over Cloncurry on Saturday night. The play started with a well-placed chip kick from one of his teammates. The lucky bounce of the chip meant Carlson could half-volley grubber kick the ball towards goal. The ball, expertly directed, ended up in the in-goal where the flanker could only ground the ball for his second try of the game. Perhaps the flanker should consider soccer for the winter season.

THE Mount Isa Rugby Union Association Ladies Day was a huge success on Saturday night at the rugby park. The MIRU Player auctions were the highlight of the night with some big bidders taking away plenty of good-looking bachelors for the right price. The highest bid of the night went to MIRU vice-president and Warrigals captain Tom Robertson at $170.
The Isa Rats Running and Triathlon club had their last Race to the Creek series race on Sunday afternoon at Lake Moondarra. All eyes will now be turned towards Julia Creek Dirt N Dust triathlon on April 17-19 after Easter. Be sure to not eat too much chocolate, triathletes!

THE Keas versus Warrigals game displayed a very physical, in-your-face, sort of game which was played in good spirit. The big hits on display reminded me of some of the American football hits you would see in their NRL. It was great to see this because not only were the impacts of players entertaining, they were also legal. In fact, I was nearly persuaded to watch the American football-themed movie The Longest Yard afterwards.

THE banter was very much in the open at Sunset Oval during the Mount Isa Cricket Association grand final between Black Stars and Townview. Having just arrived midway through the first session with Townview batting, I positioned myself on one edge of the boundary to take photos. Immediately after the first ball of the second session, Black Stars bowler Jarrod Hill yells out: “aren’t you meant to get runs in the last session?”. He expecting a six off the first ball after a break, was he?

FOURTH-placed Cavaliers were also out in strong support on Saturday to watch the decider. Cavs made themselves well known with an amusing air horn. With both president and vice-president of Mount Isa Cricket Association in the group, the spirit of cricket in Mount Isa was at a big high at the end of the season.

TOWNVIEW tragic Ross Smale got one over Black Stars when he spoke up at outfielder Jamie Stewart: “Did you turn your treadmill setting onto incline?”. Stewart, moments before, had struggled to get to a big catching chance in the outfield, which a lot of spectators from the sideline thought he could have done better with. It was noteworthy chat from the Townview camp nonetheless.

THE opening round of the Mount Isa women’s soccer did not get off to the greatest of starts with International having to forfeit their game with Atlas due to lack of numbers. There is word that International and Cloncurry players may be trying to merge into one team to keep the sixth team in the competition. It’s not too late to play - all ladies who may be interested in joining or playing should get into contact with Mount Isa Soccer Association women’s president Kerrie Dempsey on 0400 729 245.

POST-celebrations for Black Stars cricket club went well into Saturday night and early hours of Sunday morning. Word on the street says captain Kyle Keighery did not even make it out on the town on Saturday night. Bowler Jarrod Hill was believed to be pretty keen for a cheeseburger after the hearty celebrations, doing the call around for a Maccas delivery. I wonder if he has realised that McDonald’s is 24/7 yet?
