Royal Flying Doctor Service CEO Nino Di Marco confirmed all three men involved in the apparent murder-suicide at The Caves, north of Rockhampton, were RFDS employees.

He said the 53-year-old who was taken to Rockhampton Base Hospital after escaping the shooting was Rockhampton senior base pilot Captain Lindsay Hart.

The pilot is recovering in a stable condition.

Mr Di Marco mourned the passing of Captain Hart's "much-loved fellow pilot", Captain Greg McNaughton, 53, and his son Tim, 24.

Police are yet to confirm reports the younger man shot his father before taking his own life.

Tim was an apprentice engineer on leave from the Alice Springs RFDS base.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, friends and colleagues at this time and we ask that everyone respects their rights to privacy and opportunity to grieve at this difficult time," Mr Di Marco said.

"Thank you for your understanding."

Three men involved in a fatal shooting near Rockhampton on Tuesday had been target shooting before the incident, according to police.

Two men were killed and one injured in what police believe was a murder-suicide.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service has confirmed two of the men were RFDS employees.

RFDS CEO Nino Di Marco said the service was providing support to employees and families.

"All of us at the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) are deeply saddened and shocked to hear the news of this terrible tragedy in Rockhampton," he said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of those affected."

Detective Inspector Darren Shadlow said the three men were recreationally target shooting on a property on Newells Rd at The Caves, about 25 kilometres north of Rockhampton, about an hour prior to the incident.

He said a man, 53, escaped the incident after the first man was fatally shot.

"He's very distressed as well," Inspector Shadlow said.

"I can say they are close friends of his so obviously it is a very distressing time for him as well and for his family."

The 53-year-old man is in Rockhampton Hospital being treated for a gunshot wound to his arm and another bullet graze.

He called police at 4.40pm.

Police arrived on the scene about 15 minutes later and after a search of the property found two men dead near each other.

The bodies have not been identified officially but police have informed the families of the deceased.

The 50-acre property did not belong to any of the men. The owner helped police by drawing a mud map to help them find the bodies.

The weapon involved was a registered long arm rifle and police do not believe the incident was pre-meditated.

Forensic officers are still on the sceneon Wednesday, with post-mortem examinations of the body due to be conducted in the next week.

"We will stay on the scene until we have cleared it," Inspector Shadlow said.

"We still have forensic experts to look at the scene, just to paint a picture for the coroner in due course."

Police are treating the shooting deaths of two people at a home north of Rockhampton late Tuesday afternoon as a murder-suicide.

A police search for a gunman was launched about 4.40pm on Tuesday, when emergency services were called to The Caves, 25 kilometres north of Rockhampton, to reports of a 53-year-old man with gunshot wounds.

The dog squad was called to help search for the gunman who fled the scene.

He was reported to be armed, travelling in a blue ute and carrying ammunition.

Police cordoned off a number of streets in the area as the hunt continued.

The search was called off when two bodies were discovered at a home in Newells Road.

A police spokeswoman confirmed on Wednesday police were treating one of the deaths as suspicious and one as non-suspicious.

"We are not on the lookout for another party," she said.

The 53-year-old man, who was taken to Rockhampton Base Hospital in a stable condition, is not a suspect, the police spokeswoman said.

They are yet to release details of the two people found dead in the Newell Road property.

A crime scene remains in place at the property as detectives continue to investigate.
