Minister for Mines and Natural Resources Anthony Lynham was in the city on Tuesday outlining the importance for the pipeline to come from Tennant Creek to Mount Isa.
APA Group will line up against Duet Group, Jemena and Merlin Energy Australia to bid for the right to build a $900 million to $1.3 billion pipeline to connect the Northern Territory with the gas grid in the southern and eastern states.
The four companies were shortlisted by the Northern Territory government from the 11 companies invited to make submissions for the North East Gas Interconnector project.
NT Chief Minister Adam Giles said on Wednesday the quality of the submissions ‘‘has been so high that we now feel it is inevitable that this vital pipeline will be built’’.
Yet to be determined is the route of the pipeline, either from Tennant Creek to Mount Isa or from Alice Springs to Moomba in South Australia’s north.
Long-term gas transportation contracts also need to be signed to support funding for the construction.
Final bids to build the line are due in September.
