The Firebirds held off a late charge for the second straight match in a row before claiming a 48-46 win over the Adelaide Thunderbirds.

After leading by as many as 11 goals in the third quarter, the Thunderbirds cut down the Firebirds lead to just one with five minutes to play before the Firebirds held their nerve to close the match out.

Jencke said her developing attacking players especially would be better for the experience.

"We've got some young ones in the front end and you can see sometimes their rash decision making,"she said.

"Unless they experience that out in the heat of battle, week in, week out, then they won't be able to get better with their decision making. "

Defensively, the Firebirds suffocated the Thunderbirds, with Clare McMeniman in particular doing another sensational shutdown job, this time on Erin Bell.

Firebirds captain Laura Geitz and Jamaican international Carla Borrego played out an intense battle in the circle.

Queensland's defensive pressure across the court stopped the Thunderbirds in their tracks and in front of a season-high 3,150 crowd, they had the early control.

Queensland had a dominant first quarter, racing out to a 3-0 lead with their speed catching the Thunderbirds and finishing with a 14-11 lead.

It was another good day for goal attack Gretel Tippett, had shot a career-high 12 goals by half-time, finishing with 22 for the game, mixing basketball style lay ups with smart positioning in the goal circle.

Queensland's midcourt was impressive in that term, with wing attack Caitlyn Nevins winning her battle with Thunderbirds and Australian Diamonds wing defence Renae Hallinan.

The Firebirds' dominance forced the Thunderbirds into six changes at half time in a bid to stop the momentum, winning the third quarter by two goals.

After dropping their intensity in that quarter, Jencke said the next focus was on building up consistency across a whole match.

"I just felt the intensity dropped in the third quarter really and the effort with our movement,"she said.

"Just mainly in the attack end, I just thought we were labouring but to their credit we were able to dig deep and be able to finish it off.

"It's about putting together four quarters,all of us, and we still haven't got to that stage and that's what we want and we haven't done that during the season."

The Firebirds propelled themselves into second place in the Australian conference with the win, with the remainder of round six yet to be played.

Queensland face their 2014 grand final opponents, Melbourne Vixens, in Melbourne next Sunday.
