Peter Kyle, 25, was killed when the Mitsubishi Triton ute he was driving crashed into a power pole on Old Mica Creek Road about 11.20pm.
Joel Hampton, 23, of Eli Waters near Hervey Bay, was a passenger in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mr Kyle, of Towers Hill near Charters Towers, died in the early hours of Sunday morning at the Mount Isa hospital.
Both men lived and worked in Mount Isa.
The cause of the incident is yet to be confirmed with investigations ongoing.
Mount Isa Police District Inspector Trevor Kidd said police were looking into whether speed and alcohol were contributing factors.
“It is a tragic accident that has occurred, it impacts not only the families of both of the boys involved but also those in our town but it is a reminder to drive safely on our roads,” he said.
“These types of accidents can be avoided, people just need to take care and we can also remind people not to drink and drive, don’t speed and wear your seat belts.’’
The two men were believed to be part of a convoy that was on its way back to Mount Isa after four-wheel-driving.
Inspector Kidd said the fatal crash was the only major incident during the Easter weekend.
A male driver was charged in Cloncurry on Saturday afternoon at 2.20pm for drink-driving with a blood-alcohol reading of 0.215. “I have had no reports of any major incidents besides the fatal this long weekend,” he said.
“There are no reports from the Burketown fishing comp and none that I am aware of from the Boulia Rodeo.”
“There were a few unregistered vehicles charges.”
