Matariki went into the final quarter of the Mount Isa Amateur Netball Association division one clash with only a five-point lead after a solid effort in the first three quarters by HV&IS.
A strong final quarter from Matariki, scoring five goals to one, helped land a 34-25 win, securing its first points of the season after an opening round loss to Strikers.
Casey White led the charge for Matariki with 16 goals, including a 10-goal third quarter which gave her side a chance of an upset going into the final quarter.
The third quarter was a goal-scoring blitz, with 25 goals scored between the two sides.
The HV&IS attack landed 12 goals of their own to stay in the contest before the final term.
But the solid closing term from Matariki shored up its victory.
Leilani Tautiepa scored 10 goals in the opening half from goal shooter for Matariki.
Maddie Gorman and Katie Luckman were the best performers for HV&IS.
Marita Alexander and Courtenay Tohoraka led the way for Matariki across the court.
In the other division one clash, Strikers remained unbeaten in the competition with a 21-point win against Good Shepherd Catholic College (GSCC).
Ann-Maree Giles and Latasha Venz led the way for Strikers in front of goals as the side scored a comfortable 52-31 win.
Carmen Preston (16 goals) was a standout for GSCC while Abbey McKavanagh also played a leading role for the side.
In division two, Frances Potter and Nadine Botha led Matariki B to victory against Sapphires (29-21).
Denise Reiva and Julia Yalinatoba were the best players for the Sapphires.
In other matches, Yvette Wehlow and Jacinta Brix performed well as Foxs beat Matariki Just Do it (20-17).
Joeline Haupini and Adeline Toamau were the standouts in the losing side.
In division three, NQR Vixens and 2PH Joeys played out a tense 25-all draw.
The Vixens’ top performers were Caitlin Conway and Rhiannon Hibbard, while the Joeys were led by Sam Lancini and Rebekah Izzard.
Gems scored an easy win against Bullets (31-8) with D’neeka McLeod and Josie Stokes playing strongly for the winners.
Sabrina Gasio and Michelle Petitt performed well for Bullets.
In division four, the Erena Arsenich and Danielle Gulliver-led Scorches beat the Pythons (17-9).
Maree Grogan and Jessica Linnett were handy performers for the Pythons.
In other matches, Kimberley Thornton and Samantha Wells led the way for Thunder’s 21-20 win against 2PH Redbacks.
Lenore Krutzfeldt and Cindy Kelleher played well in the tense encounter for Redbacks.
Jelissa Kelland performed well in the Jelant Vixens’ 25-20 victory against the Brooke Herreygers and Amber Huntley-led Diamonds.
In the juniors, Laynee Craigie and Angilique McArdle steered the Sparklers to a 17-6 win against Matariki Junior in division one.
Charlize Osborne and Maddison McConnachie led the way for Matariki.
GSCC Junior Vixens were best served by Maddison Heggarty and Clare Smith as the side scored a 16-7 win against Spinners, who were led by Dale Tuqiri and Katie George-Sloan.
In division one-two, the Pumas scored a 48-0 win against Sunset Roar.
2PH Bullseyes secured the points against Snickers with an 18-2 win in division two. The winners were led by Piper Gosney and Chloe McCormick and Snickers’ best performers were Lilly Swaffield and Madison Clauson.
In division three, Mollie English and Teulia Koklhase played solidly for 2PH Candy Canes’ 10-4 win against the Krissy Dempsey and Ashley Woodhouse-led Sunset Tiggers.
Shakeda Crebbin and Kadea O’Donnell were standouts in Little Vixens’ 19-0 win against Kittens.
Vanessa Rigter and Kaitlin Dyer played well for Kittens.
